Bespoke AV Solution
The University of the Arts London (UAL) is a world-class university, shaping creative industries worldwide. Made of up of six colleges, it specialises in teaching art, design, fashion, communication, and performing arts.
proAV were recently engaged to deliver a bespoke AV solution to one of UAL's concept spaces based within Camberwell College of Arts to help support the collaboration between the Kyoto Institute of Technology in Japan and the UAL.
Before proAV’s involvement, the setup of the space at the UAL relied on a single fixed camera that captured a wide shot of the classroom. This offered a basic overview, but certainly fell short of delivering an engaging experience for students. In this environment, it made collaboration difficult. There were no clear ways to focus on individual speakers, conversations felt distant and impersonal, and it was hard to pick up on visual cues like facial expressions or gestures. There was no ability to fully engage with the work being presented during the video calls between the international educational establishments.
"For the student experience, it’s really important that we find other ways through technology, to create spaces, that can hold a hybrid course like this one. It feels much more like an experience, like inhabiting the same space."

Interim Course Leader, Camberwell College of Arts, UAL, University of the Arts
Our solution
To help improve the concept space at the UAL, proAV designed a custom AV system featuring five cameras, including Birddog PTZ and NDI 4K cameras. Combined with an SY video processor, it allowed for a more flexible and high-quality setup within the Microsoft Teams Room environment.
Three of these cameras are mounted on a central camera trolley, positioned to capture each side of the horseshoe-shaped table, providing a blended view of all students in the room. This ensures that every participant is clearly visible during discussions. One camera provides a wide shot, while another is portable, designed for close-up shots of students’ physical 3D work, ensuring their projects can be viewed in detail.
To ensure clear and consistent audio throughout the space, the solution featured Shure MXW Wireless Microphones and a Catchbox Microphone, enhancing communication and engagement for all participants
